Something's wrong with the composition but I can't figure out what
Why this happens
Composition problems are hard to see from inside a piece you've been working on. The most common issues are: no clear focal point, equal visual weight across the whole canvas, or the subject sitting exactly dead center.
FIX IT NOW
- Flip it: Actions โ Canvas โ Flip Canvas Horizontally. Composition errors become visible almost immediately when mirrored
- Squint until the image is nearly unreadable. Where does your eye land first? Is that where you want it? If your eye goes to the background or the edges before the subject โ contrast and value are wrong
- Crop test: Actions โ Canvas โ Crop & Resize. Try removing 10โ15% from each side and see if the composition improves. Often the problem is too much empty space, not the subject itself
- Rule of thirds check: Actions โ Canvas โ Drawing Guide โ 2D Grid. Does your subject sit near the intersection points? Dead center and dead edges are the two most common composition problems
