I added a background and it made the whole piece worse

FIX IT NOW

1. Fastest fix: select the background layer → Adjustments → Hue/Saturation/Brightness → pull Saturation down to 10–20. A near-neutral background stops competing with the subject immediately
2. If the background is too detailed and busy: select the background layer → Adjustments → Gaussian Blur → increase until the background shapes are no longer readable as distinct objects. Background should support the subject, not compete with it
3. Check the value (lightness) relationship: a light subject needs a background slightly darker than the subject. A dark subject needs a background slightly lighter. If subject and background are the same value, the subject disappears into it
