I spent 20 minutes on Instagram and now I hate everything I've made
Why this happens
You compared your in-progress rough work to someone's finished, color-corrected, carefully selected highlight reel. Your brain doesn't process "their work is more developed than mine right now" โ it processes "I am worse." That's a threat response, not an assessment.
FIX IT NOW
- Close Instagram before reading the next step โ not after, now
- Open your piece and zoom in to 200%. Find one area โ one line, one color, one shape โ that genuinely works. Not "acceptable." Something you actually like
- Screenshot just that area. Save it to your camera roll. This is your foothold
- Continue from there. One thing that works is enough momentum to keep going
FOR NEXT TIME โ set a hard limit before you sit down to draw
iPhone: Settings โ Screen Time โ App Limits โ add Instagram โ 15 min/day. Breaking the limit when it hits requires 4 deliberate taps. That friction catches the spiral before it starts.
Android: Settings โ Digital Wellbeing โ Dashboard โ tap Instagram โ set a daily timer.
