My fur and hair look like a bad wig โ€” nothing like actual hair

Why this happens

Fake-looking hair is almost always drawn as individual strands going in the same direction at the same opacity. Real hair moves in clumps, changes direction, overlaps, and has variation between thick masses and thin flyaways.

FIX IT NOW

  1. Stop drawing individual hairs. Start with the dark shadow masses between clumps โ€” paint shapes, not lines. This is the base layer
  2. On a new layer above: draw the direction of growth with flowing strokes in the base color. Not every hair โ€” just the broad flow lines for each section of hair
  3. On another new layer: add individual hairs only at the outer edges and in the brightest highlights. 10โ€“20 strokes total, not hundreds
  4. The order is: shadow masses first โ†’ flow direction second โ†’ individual strands last, only at edges and highlights
