My art looked better a year ago โ€” what happened?

Why this happens

Two common causes. First: you changed your subject, style, or tool โ€” and you're a beginner again in that new territory. Your old work looked confident because it was practiced ground. Second: your taste grew faster than your current skills in the new direction, so you see problems in your work that you couldn't see before.

FIX โ€” identify the cause first

  1. Look at what specifically changed around the time the regression started. New subject matter? Started digital after traditional? New influences? The regression almost always has a direct trigger
  2. If you switched subjects or styles: you're not getting worse, you're starting over in unfamiliar territory. The old work looks better because it was in your comfort zone. The fix is time in the new direction, not going back
  3. If nothing changed: look at whether your drawing frequency dropped. Extended breaks can make drawing feel rusty when you come back โ€” that's temporary, but regular short sessions keep things fluid. Even 20 minutes a day maintains momentum
