My colors looked great on iPad but the print came out dull and wrong
Why this happens
iPad Pro screens emit light. Paper reflects it. Screens will always look more vibrant than print โ this is physics. Additionally, if you worked in P3 color space, some of those colors physically cannot be reproduced with print ink.
FIX FOR FUTURE PRINT WORK
- Create your canvas in CMYK from the start: New Canvas โ Color Profile โ CMYK โ Generic CMYK. Colors will look slightly duller on screen but will match print more accurately. Important: the CMYK preview on iPad is a simulation, not an exact soft proof like Photoshop โ a test print is still essential
- Boost saturation and contrast slightly before sending to print โ this compensates for the inherent difference between screen and paper. Adjustments โ Hue/Saturation/Brightness โ Saturation +10โ15, Brightness +5
- Order a small test print of one piece before printing anything important. Every printer and paper stock is different. The test print is the only reliable preview
FIX FOR AN EXISTING RGB PIECE YOU ALREADY PRINTED WRONG
Increase Saturation by 10โ15 and contrast slightly in Adjustments.
Export as TIFF if your print service accepts it โ higher quality than JPEG for print output.
Ask the print service if they offer color correction or proofing โ most professional services do, and it costs less than a bad print run.
